1941 – The Company built their first squad truck on a used Packard chassis. During World War II, firefighting equipment
was donated by the United States Government Civilian Defense. Despite the War, the Company remained very active.
1947 – Cherry City receives its first brand new apparatus, an American LaFrance 750GPM Pumper with all of the latest
modern equipment of that time, including flood lights and a deluge nozzle.
1950 – The Company purchased a brand new Ford Squad truck, which was used for Rescue, Salvage and an ambulance
(first aid truck)
1956 – Communications took a change for the future. Mobile and Base radios were placed in all of the Shaler Township
stations and vehicles. A central alarm system was also installed which enabled firefighters to respond more quickly to
alarms and emergencies. With the anticipation of growth in the Company and the Cherry City Community, three lots were
purchased behind the Parker Street property, which faced Davis Avenue.
1957 – Due to the rapid growth of new homes in the First District, a second pumper was purchased. The piece was a
FWD four wheel drive, 750GPM pump with a 500 Gallon booster tank on the body. This piece served well for brush fires
and other types of non-structural fires.
1959 – With the close of the decade, the Company purchased an additional three lots on Davis Avenue, for a total of six
owned at the close of the decade.
